Iraq have appeared in just one World Cup, in 1986 in Mexico, where they were eliminated in the group stage. Asian champions in 2007, the Iraqi team qualified through the Asian qualifiers and return to the tournament after a 40-year absence — a feat of enormous significance for the country.
