DR Congo (then Zaire) made their only World Cup appearance in 1974 in West Germany, becoming the first sub-Saharan African team to participate in the tournament. The Leopards qualified through the African qualifiers and return to the World Cup after more than 50 years — a historic milestone for Congolese football.
